Intermediate Level

We use proper equipment based primarily on the child's age, and then ability level. Accordingly, we use appropriate court sizes for all ages; 36' x 18' for 8 & Under, 60' x 60' for 10 & Under, and a full size 78' court for 11 & older. We utilize the full ROGY Youth Progression balls; Red Felt for a 36' court, Orange Felt for a 60' court, and a combination of Green Felt and all yellow (regular) felt for the full 78' court.

Intermediate Level classes are for kids that have demonstrated proficiency in tennis specific skills and are just about ready, or ready for competition. These players at minimum have been playing weekly for over a year in a group lesson setting, and/or is approved by an Empire Tennis Academy Program Director. Players in these classes will be challenged mentally and physically. As they progress with age and skill, more technical and tactical themes are introduced so they can learn how to address the challenges they will face in match-play situations. All Intermediate level players in our program are expected to compete in either United States Tennis Association (USTA) or Universal Tennis Ratings (UTR) match play to test the skills they are learning in class. Click here for more on our Match Play Programs. Additionally, check out our non for profit wing, Tennis Saves on UTR. It offers year round inexpensive match play opportunities for kids 11 & older, or kids already competing in USTA Green ball match play events.

This program is one hour and a half instead of an hour, and typically eight weeks long instead of 4 weeks. At this level, players will be held accountable for knowing Forehands, Backhands, Serves, and lines of the court. Your child should be comfortable hitting balls across the net from their hand, accurately self feed, and can occasionally return a ball hit to them. Our players at this level learn how to follow through on their forehands, backhands and serves, hit the ball while running, use their voice to communicate when the ball is out and score. A large portion of the class has students playing games to learn how to play and become proficient at sending and receiving tennis balls from across the net. This is when they develop their love of the game through friendly and competitive games.

Our Intermediate level programs are for kids that are really enjoying the sport, hustling hard, and controlling their body control. Typically, a child at this level can hit a minimum of two shots consecutively in play consistently with their forehands, backhands, and serve. This is a 90 minute class instead of an hour, and eight weeks long instead of 4 weeks. At this level, players can expect to learn how to hit their groundstrokes with more dynamic movement and begin volleying from the net, and we teach them how to apply these skills in point-play situations. They may be showing interest in playing matches or competing in tournaments.

Orange Intermediate is the first step along Empire Tennis Academy’s competitive player pathway. Along with group lessons, we supplement this level with our invitation-only Orange Ball Allstars match-play group, as well as hosting USTA Orange Ball tournaments consistently throughout the year.

For kids who have demonstrated significant proficiency on the 60' court with the Orange Felt ball and can successfully rally while understanding basic point construction. Green Intermediate is the third step along Empire Tennis Academy’s competitive player pathway. At this level, we offer our Green Ball Academy package, which includes one or two weekly group lessons, weekly organized match-play, and one private lesson in the two-month session. Along with group lessons and match-play, we host USTA Green Ball tournaments and our own internal green ball tournaments consistently through the year.

Ages 11-17 Modified Intermediate

These players display competency in their core tennis fundamentals while receiving instruction, yet have minimal or no match-play experience as of yet. They are also just transitioning from using the green dot ball to yellow ball.  At this level, players focus on building more confidence in their abilities so they can begin competing soon, and develop an understanding of basic tactics that will help them through their first matches. This lesson is perfect for preparing kids to play on their modified or middle school tennis team for the first time.

Sunday, April 30th - June 25th (8 weeks $320)
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Ages 13-17

These kids have demonstrated a level of consistency with their ground strokes, volleys, overheads, and serves, and have some, though not extensive, experience with match-play. This group plays on yellow ball as they all will or already do compete on their high school tennis team. Each week’s class focuses on a new tactical or technical theme so players can learn all the necessary skills to be successful in both singles and doubles match-play.

Yellow Intermediate is the fourth and last step along Empire Tennis Academy’s competitive player pathway. Players must have a UTR rating between 1.5-3 (not Projected). Players cannot move to higher level groups without a UTR of 3 or above.
